The championship team
American women are the first country to have the honor of lifting the World Cup – World Cup when defeating Norwegian women in the final in Guangzhou, China. After 7 times the tournament was held, American women were also the most champion team with three times in 1991, 1999 and 2015. German women were the first team to successfully defend the World Championship in 2003 and 2007.
The Japanese women football team was the first Asian country to win the world in 2011 when defeating the United States in the final in Frankfurt, Germany. Four years ago on Canada, the Japanese women’s football team also came to the finals but easily lost to final US girls 2-5.
In the first two times held in 1991 and 1995, the tournament only had 12 teams participating, divided into 3 groups. There will be 2 more ranked 3rd best teams in the tables that win tickets to the quarterfinals. By 1999 in the United States, the Women’s World Cup was increased with 16 teams participating, divided into 4 groups.
By 2015, the World Women’s football championship was increased to 24 participating teams, divided into 6 groups. The format of this tournament is very similar to that of Euro 2016 when 4 best 3 teams will enter the round of 16 teams.
